The UFC targets summer for the UFC heavyweight title bout between the champion, Junior dos Santos, against the challenger, Alistair Overeem, according to mmajunkie.com.
"Hopefully this summer. This summer is probably when it's going to go down. Alistair wants to take some time off. Dos Santos is ready but needs to get some training in. So hopefully, this summer," Dana White, UFC president, said.
Overeem recently earned his title shot against dos Santos at UFC 141. Overeem punished former heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar, with knees to the body before finishing the fight with a devastating leg kick to the liver. Overeem rides an eight fight win streak and hasn't been finished in a fight since 2007.
If any man is up to the task of putting Overeem away, its dos Santos. Dos Santos won his title when he KO'ed then-champion, Cain Velasquez, 64 seconds in the first round at UFC on Fox. Dos Santos also underwent successful knee surgery following his fight with Velasquez and returned to training shortly thereafter.
"This is one of those fights where no matter where this ends up, it'll be exciting. But I see this fight standing up and finding out who hits the hardest and who has the best chin," White said.
