Kamal Shalorus injured; forced out of WEC 48
by Patrick Sullivan on March 03, 2010

Kamal Shalorus is injured and will not be fighting at WEC 48, according to Twitter post by opponent Jamie Varner. The news was later confirmed by MMAWeekly.

"Bad news kamal got hurt so can't fight until June now unless something happens to cerrone or ben!"

There has been no official announcement of Shalorus' injury, and the nature of the injury is also unknown at this time. In addition, the WEC has not announced a replacement to take on Varner.

The Iranian-born Shalorus, a 2004 Olympian in freestlye wrestling for Great Britain, was looking to make his record 3-0 in the WEC. The "Prince of Persia" debuted for the promotion in November 2009, blitzing Will Kerr in the first round. He went on to dominate highly-touted prospect Dave Jansen en route to a unanimous decision victory at WEC 46 in January.

Shalorus is yet to lose in seven professional bouts, with a 6-0-1 record. Former WEC lightweight champion Varner would be his sternest challenge to date.

Varner, meanwhile, is coming off of a bout with Ben Henderson at WEC 46 that saw the Arizona native lose his belt. Varner had not fought in 12 months prior to the Henderson fight due to a hand injury suffered during a hotly-contested split decision win over Donald Cerrone.
