A very interesting lightweight bout between the UFC debuting Takanori Gomi and contender Kenny Florian is under consideration to headline the upcoming UFC Fight Night 22 event in March.
Florian (12-4) is 7-1 in his last eight bouts, most recently scoring a very impressive second-round submission win over Clay Guida at UFC 107 last month. His lone loss over the successful eight-fight stretch came in his previous fight against B.J. Penn in a UFC lightweight title bout at UFC 101 in August.
Florian has put together a 10-3 UFC record over five-years with the promotion; scoring other notable Octagon wins over Sam Stout, Din Thomas, Joe Lauzon, Roger Huerta and Joe Stevenson while suffering other UFC losses against Sean Sherk and Diego Sanchez. "KenFlo", as he's so apt to point out, likes to finish fights, having scored stoppages in all but one of his 12 career wins including eight by submission.
Gomi (31-5), who signed with the UFC earlier this month, is currently on a two-fight winning streak, including wins over Takashi Nakakura and Tony Hervey at Vale Tudo Japan 2009 in October. He previously put together a 2-2 record with World Victory Road's Sengoku organization, losing his last two bouts with the Japanese promotion against Sergey Golyaev and Satoru Kitaoka.
Gomi was once considered to be one of the best lightweights in the world during his time with the now-defunct Pride organization from February 2004 to February 2007. He captured Pride's lightweight title and put together a superb 13-1 (1 NC) record for the promotion, scoring big wins over Jens Pulver, Marcus Aurelio, Luiz Azeredo (x2), Tatsuya Kawajiri, Hayato Sakurai and Mitsuhiro Ishida.
Thought not officially announced, UFC Fight Night 22 is expected to take place on March 31 in North Carolina, with an exact venue yet to be determined. The event will serve as the lead-in on Spike TV for the debut episode of The Ultimate Fighter 11.
