The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale featured the UFC debut of no less then nine heavyweights; none of them more anticipated than former Youtube street fighting legend Kimbo Slice. Slice came to prominence in the early part of the decade after a few of his "backyard brawls" were published on Youtube. The series featured Slice taking on a number of different opponents; each ending up on the wrong end of a viscous knockout.
It wasn't long before MMA came calling, and the now-defunct EliteXC was the first to capitalize on Slice's popularity after he took out former heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer in the first round of an exhibition fight.
Slice faced a number of sub-par or over-the-hill brawlers for the promotion before famously losing his first fight, via first-round knockout, to former UFC light-heavyweight Seth Petruzelli.
Slice sunk under the radar for the better part of a year after the loss, and when he finally emerged from his hiatus, he announced that he had accepted an offer to compete on the UFC's reality show "The Ultimate Fighter."
During the show Slice was praised by coaches and teammates for his hard work ethic and ability to learn quickly. His loss against Roy Nelson in week 3 of the competition stands as a testament to the brawler's sustained popularity as it drew more than six-million viewers -- making it the forth most-watched MMA fight in history.
When it was announced that Slice would be facing fellow former street brawler Houston Alexander fans expected sparks to fly when the two stepped inside the cage together. However, the fight was low on action and high on boo's as Kimbo tentatively followed Alexander around the ring as Alexander looked to avoid his powerful strikes.
"I guess the first part, first round, we were feeling each other out," Slice said. "Neither one of us were foolish enough to rush in for the respect of the professional sport. When your opponent possesses some type of skill and you rush in foolishly... every fighter has a puncher's chance. Neither one of us wanted to take that chance of a KO in the first round. We both were probably anxious to KO the other one but nobody wanted to get knocked out. Knowing you have an opportunity, you take it but be smart about it."
Slice fought Alexander at a catchweight of 215, which was 15-pounds lighter than his usual fighting weight. He believes the cut gave him added strength over Alexander who weighed-in at 208-pounds and usually fights at 205-pounds. Slice was able to capitalize on this strength advantage by working in his first MMA slam.
"Knowing I cut weight I knew I was a little bit stronger than he was because he's normally a light-heavyweight," Slice said. "I knew within the fight I was going to get a slam. I wanted to wait till the right time and get a good one. I'm feeling it right now. I was right along with the crowd. I was like 'ewwwwww'. I knew that was a good one on him."
Slice went on to earn a unanimous decision victory over Alexander, who is considered a gatekeeper in the organizations light-heavyweight division, but took a bit of a beating in the process. He was dropped in the third round from a solid leg kick. Alexander continually snapped them off through out the fight and they eventually took their tool on Slice.
"Inside I feel good but outside... I took some good kicks to the...
