King Mo calls out fans' knowledge of MMA outside of UFC
by Jason Benfari on January 13, 2011

"If some of this stuff happened in the UFC, the fans would give it more praise for sure. If Overeem did some of the things he's doing in the UFC, he would be considered the next God. The fact of the matter is a lot of these fans aren't familiar with what's going on in Japan, and then they try to call Strikeforce 'Strikefarce' because they hear Dana White call it that. Dana White has his own opinion or whatever, but fight fans need to have their own opinion and their own way of thinking, but we know that's asking a lot." -King Mo via FightHype

Muhammed Lawal (King Mo) takes fans to task for an apparent lack of respect afforded fighters fighting outside of the UFC. Lawal contends that MMA fans aren't educated enough on what goes on outside of the UFC.

Lawal specifically mentions Japan where he opened his career, fighting for a year and a half under the Sengoku banner. The former D-1 wrestler was wildly popular in "The Land of the Rising Sun" were he went undefeated in his first four contests before eventually making his way stateside with Strikeforce.

He went on to become the Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion after defeating highly regarded Gegard Mousasi in April of last year before dropping his first title defense, and the first fight of his career, in his next outing against current champion Rafael Cavalcante.

Lawal is currently rehabbing an ACL tear which he suffered in the loss and expects to return to action sometime this year.

 |  (28) Comments mike5k: Great idea Mo, insult the fans. You're quite a spokesperson for Strikeforce, you are. Scott Coker should make YOU fight Overeem as punishment for such ridiculous statements. News flash; fans that only watch UFC also don't read articles about "King Mo" from Strikeforce. You're only insulting those of us that do. Nice work buddy. JujitsWho: He's not wrong though. Most MMA fans believe everything Joe Rogan, Goldie, and Dana White say as the gospel and won't venture out on there own to see for themselves I actually like King Mo even more now.........Kudo's Mo!!! GO HARD: i dont know... im one of those guys that really dont want the sport to grow anymore out of selfishness. q: / i say just say whats on your mind... youre gonna have people that like it... ur gonna have people that dont. i like when people speak their mind and dont worry bout consiquenses. we should never be punished for our opinion. u could lose fans... but i doubt a statement like this would make anyone lose fans... if ur a king mo fan, u prolly just became more of a king mo fan... if u dont know who king mo is... then his statement is about u and u prolly hate him... but u might go look him up on youtube and get more educated about king mo... and sasi.. and feijao. nygiant: The fact that MOST fighters that come in from another organization(with few exceptions...page...silva) don't do so well has to be said for something. Elvis Freshley: Overeem gets plenty credit. At least enough credit for a roided out, can fighting Heavyweight with a glass chin SHOULD get. Oh? He won K-1? Who was his last MMA fight? Tod Duffee?! Oh what about his last title defense? Oh the guy Fedor knocked out and proved was a big bag of hype? Yeah...the only thing that would change with Overeem in the UFC would be that he'd have to fight in MMA against qualified opponents on the regular. That's all. B_Type13X2: These words fall on deaf ears as the very fans he is targeting are likely asking themselves, "Who is King Mo?" flyangler: King Mo can cry all he wants, but the fans that do know him know, that if he wants to be considered one of the best in the world he needs to fight in the UFC to prove it. There are 12 guys at 205 in the UFC that could beat his ass up. Mickey knox: There are alot of people out there he's right about, but he aint talkin about me or us, so it doesn't bother me. Honestly, that's the first time I've agreed with or liked anything he had to say. He would get his ass kicked in the UFC. Wandering_Minstrel: King Mo should make his way to Middleweight, I think he'd have better success there. Tonika Fatale: Lol he is no position to be insulting the fans but besides that who calls it Strikefarce thats just stupid. somnambulist: I can see what he's saying to a certain extent, as there are plenty of people out there who do take what they hear from the most accessible source and believe that it is gospel. But, maybe Mo could also question the skills of his current promoter if he feels he's not enough of a household name? Not everybody has the time, inclination or resources to undertake research to learn about a promotion; it's the promoter's job to put it under a consumer's discerning eye, surely? My own perspective; Strikeforce hasn't been fantastically promoted in the UK; but you can get some catchup on a few channels or the net. I'll put in the time, if I have it, and I've enjoyed what I've seen, but they haven't exactly got me hooked, have they?. Otherwise, I pick up news, info and opinion quite a bit from forums and sites just like this one. You'd be a fool to think that MMA starts and ends with the big brand, though - he's bang to rights about that. GO HARD: King Mo joined AKA. nice move for him, yeah?
