Lyoto Machida, Mauricio Rua, Dana White agree on rematch
by Natalia Baage on October 25, 2009

After last night's controversial UFC 104 main even decision, the two fighters, Lyoto Machida and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and UFC President Dana White agreed that the two light-heavyweights are in need of a rematch.

The bout saw Machida the victor by unanimous decision, although numerous others - excluding the judges - tallied up the score with Rua winning by, at least, split decision if not by unanimous decision.

All three judges, Cecil Peoples, Marcos Rosales and Nelson Hamilton scored the bout for Machida. Peoples and Rosales gave Machida rounds 1, 2 and 3 (and Rua rounds 4 and 5), while Nelson Hamilton gave Machida rounds 2, 3 and 4 (and Rua rounds 1 and 5).

There was a discrepancy between the judges' scorecards and what Rua felt about the fight.

"In my opinion, I thought I'd won the last three rounds," Rua said through a translator. ""My cornermen told me I was winning the fight. Everybody that has spoke the me after the fight has told me the same thing, that they thought that I won."

In the post-fight press conference, White said that he thought Rua won the fight, scoring the first, fourth and fifth rounds in his favor.

The UFC has said that there will be a rematch between the two fighters. White has already received verbal commitments from, both, Rua and Machida.

"I'm ready to make the rematch as fast as we can and I think that the second fight will be the fight we expected to see," White said. "I think they're both going to come in and not make the same mistakes they made in this first fight. They're going to come in and each one's going to try and win decisively."

White spoke about the judges in regards to the changes that need to be made to assure the fighters that this problem will not continue to happen. While White said that everyone sees fights differently, he finds it hard to understand how the judges did not see what everyone else saw.

"It drives me crazy when these guys put so much time and work and effort into these fights, going out there and fighting like that, and then not getting the right call," White said. "But the answer is yes - we're working hard to try and get better referees and get better judging and make sure that this doesn't happen."

As the rematch has only been verbally agreed upon, there have been no talk of contracts as of yet. In addition, no date or place has been set for the Brazilians' second fight.
