Lyoto Machida is set to fight Jon Jones at UFC 140 and has a chance at reclaiming the UFC light heavyweight title. With so much on the line, Machida is training like never before according to fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.
"These 30 days past were very painful in terms of physical training. We arrived at 7:30 and left at 10:30," Machida said.
Nine professionals that include coaches, conditioning experts and therapist are some of the extra help Machida has brought to his camp in preparations for his bout against Jones. In his first 30 days of training camp, Machida has been focusing on conditioning. This also includes training in a smaller cage than the UFC's Octagon in hopes of improving his agility.
"I fixed some takedowns with video because I was being taken down, so I managed to annul them with the detail of the foot position. It also worked with some attacks that sometimes we don't set well or didn't get to execute at the right time. We really got to improve this timing and the team achieved great gains," Machida explained, who would film himself during training for analysis.
Machida has also bulked up for his upcoming fight, adding 20 kilos of muscle to his frame. Jones, will be making his second title defense against Machida after a successful defense against Quinton Jackson at UFC 135.
In addition to Jones' unorthodox style, he also a 10 inch reach advantage over Machida. For Machida, his training in a smaller cage will need to pay off if he hopes to remain elusive, dipping in and out of Jones' 84 inch reach for strikes.
"He (Jones) is a new version of a fighter, is a guy that is coming with new techniques. I've got great hopes for this fight, really with so much motivation, because I think each victory comes from the training," Machida said.
