Fans will have to wait six more months to see the rematch they have been clamoring for since the controversial ending which took place at UFC 104.
UFC light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (16-0) and worthy challenger Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (18-4) will look to finish what they started, as both are in talks to rematch on May 1, 2010 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
News of the bout was first reported by Dan Wetzel from Yahoo!Sports.com, who revealed the match up on his official Twitter account.
"Dana White just told me: Lyoto Machida will defend UFC light-heavyweight belt against Shogun Rua May 1 in Montreal." Wetzel wrote.
The first meeting between Machida and Rua took place on Oct. 24 in Los Angeles, Calif for Machida's lightweight championship strap. Machida was awarded a controversial unanimous decision win over Rua after five closely contested rounds. Actually all three judges, Nelson Hamilton, Cecil Peoples and Marcos Rosales, scored it 48-47 for Machida.
As soon as the decision was announced, fans at the Staples Center immediately booed Machida and fans worldwide have voiced their displeasure with Rua not being ruled the victor. UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta and company president Dana White both said they thought "Shogun" won as well, making it one of the most controversial decisions in UFC history.
Not long after the contest, White stated that the UFC would be seeking to book a rematch as soon as possible. Both Machida and Rua verbally agreed to a rematch at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 following the fight, but Machida would ultimately could not take the fight as he had to undergo surgery to repair an injured left hand which he hurt during the fight.
It was Machida's first title defense since winning the light-heavyweight belt at UFC 98 in May by beating then undefeated Rashad Evans. Since being with the UFC, he's captured other notable Octagon wins over the likes of Sam Hoger, David Heath, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Sokoudjou, Tito Ortiz, and Thiago Silva.
Rua proved that Machida isn't as invincible as people once thought, as he often stifled and frustrated the champ throughout the five-round fight. He scored throughout the fight with an impressive mix of kicks and body shots to batter Machida.
The unfortunate loss snapped a two-fight winning streak Rua had put together, scoring previous wins over Mark Coleman and Chuck Liddell.
Following a pair of serious knee injuries, which likely contributed to a poor showing in his UFC debut loss against Forrest Griffin, Rua has showed signs that the "Shogun" of old appears to be back. His next fight will go a long way toward determining if he's fully regained the form that once saw him considered the top light-heavyweight in the sport.
