Russian promotion, M-1 Global, wants to partner with the UFC to set up a heavyweight bout pitting Fedor Emelianenko vs. Cain Velasquez in Moscow Russia according to fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.
"We are ready to move forward and offer the deal to UFC. M-1 is ready to take all organizational duties and make fight Fedor Emelianenko - Cain Velasquez in Moscow in 2012," Vadim Finkelstein, M-1 president, said.
These renewed desires to partner with the UFC stems from the high attendance at the M-1 event this past weekend. The card's main event pitted Emelianenko against MMA journeyman, Jeff Monson. Emelianenko snapped a three fight losing streak with a unanimous decision win over Monson.
"I can guarantee that gates will be at least at the same level as in US, and live attendance can even break all current records. M-1 is ready to co-operation and we would like to discuss about any possibilities to make this tournament happen," Finkelstein said.
M-1 and the UFC already have a history together, with the UFC unsuccessfully signing Emelianenko to its roster in the past. UFC president, Dana White, has also rejected any talks of co-promotion with M-1 or any other MMA promotion for that matter. As such, an Emelianenko vs. Velasquez bout seems highly unlikely but M-1 seems to be taking the first steps in trying to re-open negotiations with the UFC.
