MMA news roundup: Silva to fight when ready and Melendez/Florian discuss their futures
by Hubert Lau on October 10, 2011

Despite the bold challenge from Chael Sonnen, nine time defending middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, and his camp will not be baited into a bout with Sonnen until Silva is ready according to fightersonlymagazine.com.

"Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck...If I beat you, you leave the middleweight division. If you beat me, I leave the UFC, forever," Sonnen said in the post fight interview, moments after his victory over Brian Stann at UFC 136.

Sonnen thoroughly dominated Stann in their middleweight match up, utilizing his superior wrestling to full effect. An arm triangle choke in the second round by Sonnen sealed the deal as the ensuing tapout from the former WEC light heavyweight champion more than likely aligned a rematch with Silva.

"Chael is not the person that's going to determine when Silva is going to take the fight. When he's going to take this fight is when his shoulder is completely healed up, and he's ready to start his training camp for the fight," Ed Soares, Silva's manager, said.

Silva suffered a shoulder injury during training prior to his UFC 134 win over Yushin Okami.

In their first meeting at UFC 117, Sonnen out wrestled Silva for four consecutive rounds and was the first man in recent memory to have posed a serious threat to Silva's title. However Silva managed to sink in a triangle choke in the fight's closing minutes to pull off one of the greatest comebacks in MMA history to retain his title.

"It's not because Chael says he wants to fight in February. Who is Chael to determine that? Chael needs to take a number and wait his turn. He got his opportunity, and he tapped. It's not the first time he's tapped, and I guarantee you it won't be the last," Soares added.

Gilbert Melendez seeks recognition and looks to join the UFC, ready for a title shot according to mmamania.com.

"I'm definitely impressed by Frankie. He's an amazing fighter. He's great. I honestly feel like I'm the No. 1 contender and I feel like I'm ready for the title shot now," Melendez said.

Melendez is currently Strikeforce's two time defending lightweight champion, riding a five fight win streak. In his time spent with Strikeforce, Melendez has established himself as one of the sport's best lightweight talents who also holds 12 stoppages among his 19 overall wins. Melendez has already expressed his interest in joining the UFC, the home of arguably the best MMA talent compared to any other promotion.

"I just wanted to discuss my future with the organization; it looks like I have a good future. ... I just expressed that I want to fight the best. The UFC title is the best belt, I want that belt and I want it as soon as possible," Melendez said.

Currently Melendez is set to fight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal, for his next bout. Melendez last defeated Tatsuya Kawajiri, sending the Japanese star packing within the very first round via TKO.

"As of now I have to focus on that guy (Masvidal). He's real tough...The most frustrating thing is the recognition, a lot of people don't recognize me as a great fighter because I haven't beaten any UFC guys," Melendez said.

UFC featherweight, Kenny Florian, plans to take time off to evaluate his future according to mmaweekly.com.

Florian recently contested featherweight champion,
