"It's an honor fighting on this day and an honor fighting Mike Brown who is a former champion. Like I said, I'm going for that belt man. I hit him really hard, he looped and missed an overhand, I got in and capitalized on it. It was part of my gameplan to knock him out. I respect the champion and if I don't get him. it's okay, I can wait, but my goal is to challenge the champion. Jose Aldo is a true champion, he is a phenom. I really want to fight him, and hopefully it's next. If they want me to do it, I'm ready to do it." -Manny Gamburyan
After impressively dropping former WEC featherweight champion and pound-for-pound notable Mike Brown at last week's WEC 48, Manny Gamburyan wants the man many consider to be one of the best fighters on the planet - current WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.
Aldo (17-1) easily bested former popular champion Urijah Faber at the same event last Saturday. He consistently beat the ultra quick Faber to the punch after chopping down his mobility with devastating leg kicks. The win gave Aldo dominant victories over the divisions' last two champions, and he has been absolutely despotic in his WEC reign, going 7-0 with six knockouts.
Gamburyan (11-4), the cousin of vastly talented but troubled welterweight Karo Parisyan, rose to prominence after his highly successful stint on "The Ultimate Figher" season 5. Dispite being undersized at lightweight, Gamburyan dominated his competition on the show, which included big wins over lightweights Noah Thomas, Matt Wiman, and Joe Lauzon, en route to a spot on the series finale against current welterweight Nate Diaz. Gamburyan controlled the fight and looked to be headed toward a win when he dislocated his sholder during a takedown, and was forced to tap himself out.
After the show, the 5'5" Gamburyan continued to fight as an undersized lightweight, winning his first two UFC fights before dropping two in a row to Rob Emerson and Thiago Tavares. The losses prompted Gamburyan to drop to the WEC featherweight division where he would finally compete with men his size.
Gamburyan has responded by posting three straight wins in impressive fashion, and has seemingly positioned himself as the organizations' top contender after his huge victory over Brown on Saturday.
