A potentially explosive featherweight bout between TUF 5 runner-up Manny Gamburyan and Team Jackson's Leonard Garcia is in the works for WEC 44 in Nov. News of the bout was first reported by Sherdog.com.
Gamburyan (9-4) is coming off of a successful WEC debut, as he defeated John Franchi at WEC 41 in June. He decided to make the long-awaited move to the featherweight division and compete in the WEC following back-to-back losses in the UFC against Rob Emerson and Thiago Tavares. Gamburyan exited the UFC with a sub-par record of 2-3 with the promotion, with wins over Jeff Cox, Nate Mohr, and a loss against Nate Diaz due to a shoulder injury in his debut at the Ultimate Fighter season 5 finale.
Gamburyan has been competing professionally off and on for 10 years, fighting for such promotions as Kage Kombat and King of the Cage. He has finished seven of his nine career wins, and holds notable wins over the likes of Sam Morgan and current Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago.
Garcia (13-4) most recently defeated Jameel Massouh at WEC 42 last month. Prior to the win, he was defeated by WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown at WEC 39 in March. Since joining the WEC, Garcia has put together a 3-1 record with the promotion, with other wins over Hiroyuki Takaya and Jens Pulver.
Like his opponent, Garcia previously competed as a lightweight in the UFC as he put together a 1-2 record with the promotion from April 2007 to Sept. 2007. He is best remembered for his spirited and exciting three-round war with Roger Huerta at UFC 69 in which Huerta was the victor, however, the bout earned both men national attention and was consider to be one of the best fights of 2007. Another interesting sidenote about Garcia is that he has finished all but one of his 13 career wins.
Thought not officially announced, WEC 44 is expected to take place on Nov. 18 in Las Vegas, NV, and will be headlined by a much anticipated WEC featherweight title bout between current champ Mike Brown and top contender, Jose Aldo.
