Mark Coleman hasn't fought professionally since his loss in the main event to Randy Couture at UFC 109. The 46-year old fighter was cut immediately following the event and he hasn't gone looking for other employment since then.
"I've had some offers that intrigued me, but at the same time, I don't want to be a journeyman," Coleman told MMAJunkie.com. "I don't want to go out there and get my butt whupped for a paycheck. If it comes down to that, I might do it. But right now, I'm able to survive."
Countless greats have settled for being a living punching bag, a guy that up-and-comers can beat to get a respected name on their resume. Coleman doesn't want to be one of those guys. It seems as if his fiery passion for the sport, and for winning, have gotten the better of him. This is the same guy who jubilantly jumped around the ring like a mad man after winning the Pride FC 2000 Open-weight Grand Prix. The same guy who had a near tantrum after losing to Fedor Emelianenko.
Even though Coleman isn't looking for fights and won't be fighting no names on the regional circuit anytime soon, there is one match-up that interests the father of ground-n-pound.
"An opportunity to fight Herschel Walker would be something that I would drop everything [for] and try to train and prepare for him," Coleman said.
Herschel Walker is the 49-year old super athlete, the man with a 25-year old's body. A former NFL running back, Walker turned to other forms of competition once his football career ended. He became a fifth degree black belt in taekwondo, he almost made the Olympics as one leg of relay team in track and he did compete in the Winter Olympics in bobsledding.
Walker recently focused his attention to mixed martial arts, competing twice under the Strikeforce banner. Walker hinted that he would like to fight again.
Coleman wants to be his opponent.
