Matt Betzold, one-legged fighter, wins his debut MMA fight

In his first MMA match, Matt Betzold defeated Robert Mendoza via first-round arm bar on Saturday night.

A decorated grappler with numerous awards, Betzold holds has won 96 grappling matches with a total of 120 total bouts under his belt.

Betzold, 25, a one-legged fighter, had his leg amputated when he was six-years old after eating candy that was poisoned with mushroom spores. In school, classmates would pick on him because he was missing a leg. He stood up for and defended himself by fighting.

Wanting the opportunity to fight professionally, Betzold sought out a license to fight way back in 2004, but was turned down numerous times. He continued to try for five years, before the state of Arizona finally gave him a chance and sanctioned him to fight in Aug. 2009.
