Matt Mitrione: I have not heard anything about fighting Joey Beltran
by Natalia Baage on May 11, 2010

While rumors are circulating about the heavyweight match up between Matt Mitrione and Joey Beltran meeting at UFC 117, it seems as if the speculation might simply be just speculation.

"To be 100 percent, completely honest, I have not heard anything about that at all," Mitrione told FiveKnuckles.com today. "My brother-in-law texted me last night about it, and I told him I had no clue. I have not heard a word from anybody about that. And that's not even secrecy talk - that's completely legitimate talk."

Mitrione admitted that he is not overly familiar with Beltran, but knows that he is a heavy hitter who now has wins over over Houston Alexander, Rolles Gracie and Tim Hague.

"He's a very nice guy," said Mitrione, who spoke casually with Beltran at UFC 113. "And I was happy to see him win. I don't know anything about him other than what I've heard briefly when I was talking to him."

However, if the two do fight, Mitrione promises fans a great show.

At last weekend's UFC 113, Mitrione defeated Kimbo Slice. During the fight, when Mitrione secured a triangle, Slice stuck his right thumb in Mitrione's left eye, probably, according to Mitrione, because he didn't want to tap.

"It's kinda bush league," Mitrione said, "but we're fighting for a paycheck. If you can get away with it, then I guess it is what it is."

Pre-fight, many were skeptical to pick Mitrione over Slice due to his inexperience and Slice's striking power. While they said Mitrione has a good chin, they thought Slice's muscle could still knock him out.

"You can never tell somebody's power until you get touched by it, and you can't take other people's word for it because you don't know how good other people's chins are," Mitrione said. "So I expected a nasty punch that would really make me respect it quite a bit. And I just kinda felt like it was just another punch. I never felt threatened by his punches."

And even though Mitrione walked away with a second-round TKO, he wasn't happy to see Slice let go from the UFC. Mitrione even came up with a solution to help Slice stay.

"I was sad to see [him let go]," he said. "I like Kimbo. I want him to be able to pay his bills as well as possible. I'm sad to see it, he's a good dude.

"Honestly, what I kinda thought would happen was that they would tell him, 'Look, since you know you don't belong in heavyweight, cut to 205, We're gonna bring back Seth Petruzelli, have a 205 fight, and the winner stays.'  That's what I thought they were gonna do."
