Matt Mitrione: "On the show I was a jerk. I'd boo the hell out of me too."
by Jason Benfari on December 07, 2009

TUF 10 participant, Matt Mitrione, did not do much to endear himself to fans or fellow contestants during his time spent on the Spike TV reality show. The former NFL football player gave away his team's fight strategies to the opposing team, challenged a teammate to fight, and continually argued with his coaches and teammates.

The Integrated Fighting Academy product, who won his official MMA debut over popular fellow former NFL football player Marcus Jones this weekend at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale, was roundly booed by the fans in the arena following his fight. However, he does not blame fans for disliking him on TV.

"On the show I was a jerk," Mitrione said. "I can't blame anybody for not liking me. Especially with that representation. I didn't know the experience was going to be like that otherwise I would have been more guarded with things. From what they were showing, I'd boo the hell out of me too."

Aside from the aforementioned indiscretions, Mitrione was often seen talking to himself and sitting out of practices with questionable injuries. His behavior was so erratic that his fellow castmates, led by James McSweeney and Wes Sims, bet on when he might snap and tried to aid him in that endeavor.

"For people that know me, they know I'm not what was displayed on television," Mitrione said. "I'm actually a pretty cool cat. I'm 80% normal, 20% crazy. I think the 20% got exposed on television. Today was more, come out with personal pride and display who I am."

That, according to Mitrione, is a good fighter with power, a solid chin, and a commitment to the sport.

"I am a good fighter," Mirtione said. "I have better ground than I displayed and I just panicked when I got caught on the show. I never got caught in a submission and I just made a poor choice. Today was more to show I'm better than that. I really enjoy fighting and it's a great way to maintain athletic camaraderie. Even if I had lost, I wouldn't have quit things. I think I punch pretty damn hard and I think I have a good chin. When it comes down to a puncher, I think I do okay. Now it's just getting used to the adrenaline rush and the adrenaline dump."

As for the fight itself, Mitrione, who came in as the underdog, landed solid blows through out the contest and gained confidence after he was able to get back to his feet after being taken down my Jones, who's primarily a ground fighter.

"I knew I stunned him a couple time in the first round and I knew he didn't have very much stand-up endurance," Mitrione said. "He's the guy that could probably go all day on the ground, but not standing up. Once I felt I was getting up off the ground without much effort, I was thinking, 'okay, this won't be that bad.'"
