Former two-time UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes recently said some snide comments regarding his UFC 112 opponent Renzo Gracie.
During an interview conducted at Strikeforce: Miami, Hughes was asked why he decided to take the fight against UFC newcomer Gracie.
"Because he is older than I am, to be honest," Hughes responded jokingly.
Given the history between Hughes and the Gracie family, this type of early trash talk was almost expected to come from the fighters before their bout.
However, the comments have lead former welterweight champion Matt Serra to wonder if Hughes is taking his upcoming fight against Gracie seriously.
"He really said that?" asked Serra, referring to Hughes' age comment. "Maybe he's joking around, that guy. He's doing that thinking Renzo's an easy fight. He's in for a rude awakening."
Serra, the first non-Brazilian to be awarded a Gracie black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the United States, has strong ties to the Gracie family. He also has a long-standing feud with Hughes.
When asked about a possible rematch with Hughes, Serra wasn't entirely sure about how Hughes would react to another bout.
"Personally, I don't think he would be interested in it," said Serra. "But I'd love him to be interested in it. I'd fight Hughes tomorrow."
UFC 112 will take place on April 10 in Abu Dhabi. The event will be headlined by a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and Demian Maia.
