A welterweight bout between former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and six-time UFC veteran Frank Trigg is set for the televised portion of the UFC 109 fight card in February.
The long rumored bout was confirmed today by Serra to The Fight Network, where he revealed that he had signed a bout agreement for the fight.
Serra (9-6) hasn't fought since losing a debatable unanimous decision to fellow ex-UFC welterweight champion and bitter rival, Matt Hughes, at UFC 98 this past May. Despite the loss, he, along with Hughes, pocketed an extra $60,000 "Fight of the Night" bonus for the performance. The loss at UFC 98 was Serra's second straight, as he had previously lost to current welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 83 in April of 2008.
Prior to the losses, Serra had won two straight, including a shocking upset victory over St. Pierre at UFC 69 to capture the UFC welterweight title. He has put together an even 6-6 record in eight-years with the UFC, scoring notable Octagon wins over the likes of Yves Edwards, Jeff Curran and Chris Lytle; while suffering UFC losses against Karo Parisyan and BJ Penn. The Ultimate Fighter 4 winner has spent the majority of his career with the UFC, fighting 12 of his 15 career fights with the promotion.
Trigg (19-7) recently returned to the UFC following four-years away from the promotion. He was given a rude welcome back by Josh Koscheck, who defeated him via first round TKO at UFC 103 in September. He was thought to have been released from the UFC following the loss, however, he was granted another fight and will be fighting for his UFC career against Serra. During his time away from the UFC, Trigg went 6-1 to earn the eventual call back to the organization.
Trigg holds a sub-par 2-4 UFC record, capturing Octagon wins over Dennis Hallman and Renato Verissimo; while suffering a pair of UFC losses against Matt Hughes and also losing to Georges St. Pierre. During his 12-year career, he has fought for an array of notable promotions such as Pride, Icon Sport, Shooto, Sengoku and Strikeforce. He has finished 14 of his 19 career wins and holds other notable career victories over the likes of Kazuo Misaki, Hayato Sakurai and Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
Though not officially announced, UFC 109 is tentatively set for Feb. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV and is rumored to be headlined by a UFC middleweight title fight between current champ Anderson Silva and challenger, Vitor Belfort.
In addition, UFC Hall-of-Famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman will meet in a light-heavyweight bout slated for the card. Also, middleweight contenders Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt will look to get closer to a title shot when they face off at the event.
