The injury bug has bitten yet another UFC 133 light-heavyweight, as 14-year MMA veteran Vladimir Matyushenko (25-5) has been forced off the August 6 card with an as of yet unknown ailment.
Replacing Matyushenko against fellow 205'er Alexander Gustafsson will be 12-fight UFC veteran Matt Hamill. The bout will remain on the Spike TV broadcast of the two-fight UFC 133 prelims special.
The change was announced by the UFC today.
Matyushenko's UFC 133 withdrawal is a bit strange considering earlier today UFC President Dana White stated that "The Janitor" was one of the options to replace the injured Phil Davis in the event's headliner.
Hamill (10-3) most recently suffered a unanimous decision loss to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in the main event of May's UFC 130 event. The loss snapped a five-fight win streak he had put together, which included wins inside the Octagon over Reese Andy, Mark Munoz, Jon Jones, Keith Jardine and Tito Ortiz.
Gustafsson has won his last two bouts since suffering the first loss of his career to Phil Davis at UFC 112. Both wins have come via rear-naked choke submission over Cyrille Diabate at UFC 120 and most recently James Te Huna at UFC 127 in February.
The Swede sports a near perfect 11-1 professional MMA record, with seven of his wins coming by TKO or KO including a first round knockout win over Jared Hamman in his UFC debut in Nov. 2009.
Hailing from "The City of Brotherly Love" Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center, UFC 133 is now headlined by a newly put together light-heavyweight rematch between former 205-pound champs Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz.
