Mauricio "Shogun" Rua on Machida fight: "My only mistake was I left it to the judges."
by Joe Rimmer on May 03, 2010

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is not alone in the belief that he won the UFC light-heavyweight championship when he took on Lyoto Machida in the two's now infamous UFC 104 fight.

However, as we now all know, the three men sitting ringside judging the contest didn't agree, and Machida escaped with one of the most controversial decisions of all time.

Now, on the eve of the long awaited rematch between the two Brazilians, Shogun admits that leaving the fight in the hands of those three judges was the worst mistake he could have made.

"I think I won the fight,"Shogun told the UFC, "Everything in the fight went as planned. Lyoto left the Octagon with broken ribs, bruised legs and a bloody mouth. How did I leave the Octagon? Ready to fight again.

"My only mistake was I left it to the judges."

Shogun believes that he has the answer to Machida's game and is confident that this time he will inflict the defeat that has so far proven elusive to all of "The Dragon's" previous opponents.

"My game matches up well with his game," he said, "I come from a school where I learned to kick very well, and it's something in my arsenal I feel very comfortable with."

The former Pride grand-prix winner may be looking to use a similar game plan to the one that appeared to work so well in the first fight between the two, however he wants to make one change, and that is to finish the champion.

"I always fight to win and develop a particular game plan for every fight, but I am always looking for the knockout first," he said, "I'm a fighter that goes out there looking to finish fights."

After seeing the bout pushed back due to Machida needing surgery on a broken hand, a fully focused and confident Shogun could prove to be a nightmare for the champion. And Rua is confident that this time it will be his hand being raised.

"Defeating Lyoto Machida and becoming the light-heavyweight champion is my ultimate goal. I'll do whatever it takes to make sure it happens.

"I'll fight him anywhere, anytime."

 |  (5) Comments Ares: It's crazy that judging is such a problem that people have to be actually afraid of letting them decide if they won the fight or not and take big risks to prevent it from happening. I really hope that Shogun wins the rematch, he deserves that belt. IwishIwasMMA: Well there are certain rules that are not officially in the book yet that most fans dont know about. Examples are: 1. When Cecil Peoples refs, you should flip a coin to prevent any permanent damage to a you or your opponent. You may think this is silly, but a death in MMA is not needed. 2. When Cecil Peoples is judging, you want to do whatever it takes to finish the fight or you will automatically lose if you are winning.. Or you will hear retarded scores that no other person in their right mind could make. (ex. Kenflo/Sherk for LW title.. watch Kenflos face when he hears the scores.) 3. When Mazzagatti is reffing.. there is absolutely NO WAY TO PROPERLY UNDERSTAND THE OUTCOME OF THE MATCH. It is PURE LUCK.. and zero skill. Russian Roulette with a full clip is safer than having Mazzagatti ref a match. 4. ACs have the brains of a two year old when it comes to proper grappling scores. The people they employ know less about the sport than the guy who just tuned in yesterday to see his first match ever. There are others, but I am sure you people can add them over time. Mickey knox: Had Cecil judged the Aldo/Faber fight, Faber might have won.
