As previously reported this week by Fiveknuckles.com, the UFC's ageless legend Randy Couture (19-10) announced his retirement from MMA. He let his twitter followers know that he thought he was at the end of the road in his MMA fighting career.
"Thanks to everybody who's been tweeting about seeing my fights I must have missed the memo :)," Couture tweeted. "I think I'm at the end of it Yall . It's time."
The tweet was followed up later by a comment from Couture stating his interest in fighting either Lyoto Machida (16-2) or current UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (19-4), otherwise he was leaning toward retirement.
A fight against either opponent seems unlikely. Both fighters appear much further up on the light-heavyweight ladder, but that doesn't mean it's a fight fans won't want to see.
Count Rua among those would love to see Couture continue to fight.
"Randy Couture has more to give to MMA and shouldn't retire yet!," Rua tweeted at UFC President Dana White. "I would be honored to fight him, he is a legend of the sport!"
With Couture's ability to get pay-per-view buys, it's a possibility, however unlikely, that he could eventually see himself in a match-up with "Shogun." Many believe that it is an uneven match-up, with the title-holder Rua having a clear advantage.
If a fight between either men is made, it would be only Couture's second at light-heavyweight in the past four years. His last fight at 205-pounds was a decision victory over Brandon Vera (11-5) at UFC 105. The fight saw Vera find success striking with Couture - he was able to land a few devastating blows that knocked Couture down, but the former Olympic wrestler was able to secure the win with his clinch work against the cage, even though the damage he caused was minimal.
