Melvin Guillard has no lack of confidence as he prepares to battle Joe Lauzon at UFC 136 this upcoming weekend according to mmajunkie.com.
"I'm going in the same way I went in on Evan Dunham, who was a Brazilian jiu-jitsu guy. The same way I went in on Shane Roller, who was a BJJ guy. Man, they're going to call me the jiu-jitsu killer after I'm done with Lauzon," said Guillard.
Guillard is currently riding a five fight win streak, three of those wins coming from KO/TKO, and another victory under his belt can very well mean a title shot.
"I'll see what happens when it happens. After I win this fight, if I get a title shot next, then I get a title shot next. If Dana calls me and says, 'I want you to fight Gilbert,' I going to fight Gilbert. I'm a fighter, bro. The belt will come," explains Guillard as he addresses the possibility of fighting Strikeforce's lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, who recently expressed his interest in fighting in the UFC.
Aside from training with Greg Jackson and his team at Jackson's Submission Fighting in Albuquerque, Guillard has been working with a Dutch kickboxing specialist who Guillard attributes to helping him improve on his already admirable punching power.
For Lauzon he will look to extend his win streak to two fights after having an up and down record since late 2009. He last defeated Curt Warburton at UFC live on Versus 5 via kimura submission in the opening round.
"He's a very dangerous guy, and he's very talented. Does he present any problems for me? Yes, if I allow him to...If I don't get a title shot this year, I will go undefeated, and I will put myself in position by 2012 to have my title," said Guillard
UFC 136 on October 8 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas will play host for the third meeting between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard as they vie for the UFC's lightweight belt. Featherweight champion, Jose Aldo, will look to defend his title against Kenny Florian.
Also on the main card is the Guillard vs. Lauzon lightweight tilt. The middleweight's top contender to be determined by a bout between Brian Stann and Chael Sonnen. Nam Phan to rematch with Leonard Garcia.
