Melvin Guillard says his loss to Joe Lauzon at UFC 136 was a life lesson and looks to eliminate Jim Miller in their upcoming bout at UFC Fight Night 26 according to mmacanada.net.
"The biggest thing I learned was to be patient and not rush myself. The only reason he won that fight was because I rushed myself. I was rushing my shots, trying to hit him. I actually ran into a stiff jab that actually rocked me. By the time I hit the canvas, I shook it off, but before I can shake it off, he was already on my back...So, it's a life lesson," Guillard said.
Lauzon is arguably as dangerous on the ground as Guillard is dangerous on the feet, Lauzon holds 17 submission wins as well as four Submission of the Night awards. At UFC 136, Guillard experienced that first hand when Lauzon sunk in a rear naked choke just 47 seconds into the opening round. Luckily for Guillard, his stock hasn't dropped much from his loss and is set to battle fellow top tier lightweight, Jim Miller.
"I've been blessed even more that after the loss I've been given a number one contender fight against Jim Miller...Going into this fight, I've actually moved camps for this fight. I'm down in Florida training with Rashad Evans and the guys at Imperial. I got me a personal trainer as far as my Jiu Jitsu...I'm working with Rashad on my wrestling. So I'm sharpening my tools that I keep having an issue with in the ring, that way I know going into this fight with Jim Miller I have everything covered," Guillard said.
Miller will be looking to rebound from a loss to Ben Henderson who is currently slated to challenge Frankie Edgar for his lightweight title at UFC 144. He was on a seven fight win streak prior to the loss.
Guillard has always been known to be a fighter ripe with potential but unable to take the next step that separates a contender from a prospect. Will he be able to establish himself with a win over Miller?
"This fight is going to come down to who makes the first mistake and with a guy like Jim Miller you can never underestimate him," Guillard said.
UFC Fight Night 26, otherwise known as UFC on FX 1, will be scheduled on January 20 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
