Running off emotions following his win at last month's UFC 114, rising lightweight contender Melvin Guillard boldly requested a fight with fellow slugger Jeremy Stephens in a post-fight interview.
It appears UFC matchmaker Joe Silva has given Guillard what he asked for, as a match up between Guillard and Stephens is reportedly in the works for the televised main card of the UFC 119 on September 25 at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Guillard (24-8-2) is 5-1 in his last six bouts, which includes a current two fight winning streak. He most recently scored a first round knockout win over newcomer Waylon Lowe at the aforementioned UFC 114 event on May 29. Guillard caused the stoppage against Lowe after landing a vicious knee to the body, which cause his opponent to collapse to the mat.
Guillard has put together a solid 7-4 UFC record since debuting with the promotion in November 2005. The Jackson's Submission Fighting product holds other notable Octagon wins over Marcus Davis, Gabe Ruediger, Dennis Siver and Gleison Tibau, while suffering other UFC losses to Rich Clementi, Josh Neer, Joe Stevenson and Nate Diaz.
Stephens (17-5) has also won two straight fights, picking up wins over Justin Buchholz and most recently Sam Stout at UFC 113 last month. Stephens and Stout both took home an extra $65,000, as their UFC 113 bout was awarded the "Fight of the Night" bonus.
Prior to his wins over Buchholz and Stout, Stephens lost back-to-back fights against grapplers Joe Lauzon and Gleison Tibau. He now sports a 5-4 UFC record, picking up other notable Octagon wins over Diego Saraiva, Cole Miller and Rafael dos Anjos. The Midwest Cage Championships veteran has brutal knockout power, as he has finished 12 of his 17 career wins by TKO or KO.
