The Dream, World Victory Road and K-1 collaborated year-end "Dynamite!! 2009" event is nearing completion, with the latest announcement today of the addition of an MMA bout between middleweights Melvin Manhoef and Kazuo Misaki to the card.
The event takes place on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. The K-1 and MMA mixed card will air in North American on HDNet.
The bout between Manhoef and Misaki is the ninth bout that features fighters from Dream and World Victory Road's Sengoku Raiden Championships battling it out against each other. Manhoef is a Dream vet, while Misaki is a veteran of Sengoku.
Other notable DREAM vs. Sengoku match ups include Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto (DREAM) vs. Masanori Kanehara (Sengoku), Hayato "Mach" Sakurai (DREAM) vs. Akihiro Gono (Sengoku), Hideo Tokoro (DREAM) vs. Marlon Sandro (Sengoku), Hiroyuki Takaya (DREAM) vs. Michihiro Omigawa (Sengoku) and Alistair Overeem (DREAM) vs. Kazuyuki Fujita (Sengoku).
Manhoef signed with Strikeforce earlier this month and was heavily rumored to be making his Strikeforce debut against Robbie Lawler at the promotion's January 30 event, however, its now unlikely that Manhoef will fight at the event.
Manhoef (23-6-1) is 1-2 in his three bouts, most recently losing to Paulo Filho at Dream 11 in July. His lone win over the span came against Mark Hunt via first round knockout at New Year's Eve Fields Dynamite!! card in Dec. 2008. Prior to his recent 1-2 stretch, Manhoef put together a five fight win streak from July 2007 to June 2008, which included wins over Bernard Ackah, Fabio Silva and Kazushi Sakuraba.
During his 14-year career, Manhoef has fought for other notable promotions such as K-1 Heros, Rings and Cage Rage, where he held the now-defunct promotion's light-heavyweight belt. He has finished an amazing 22 of his 23 career wins by TKO or KO and holds other notable career wins over the likes of Evangelista Santos, Shungo Oyama, Crosley Gracie and Ian Freeman.
Manhoef also holds a 37-8 professional kickboxing record, with 27 of his wins coming by knockout.
Misaki (22-9-2) is 4-1 in his last five bouts, most recently defeating Kazuhiro Nakamura at Sengoku 9 in August. His only defeat over the five-fight span came in his previous bout against Jorge Santiago in January.
Though he has previously competed for Deep, Strikeforce and Sengoku, Misaki has fought the majority of his eight-year career with Japan's Pride and Pancrase organizations; fighting a combined 27 of his 34 career bouts, with both promotions. He holds notable career wins over the likes of Ed Herman, Siyar Bahadurzada, Logan Clark, Phil Baroni, Denis Kang, Joe Riggs and Dan Henderson.
