Though certainly the biggest, UFC 99 wasn't the only major MMA event taking place today. Adrenaline III: "Bragging Rights" was held at the BJCC Arena in Birmingham, Ala. and featured former UFC champion Tim Sylvia making his way back into the cage after his 36-second beatdown last year at the hands of WAMMA champion Fedor Emelianenko. Sylvia figured to exersize some demons by facing off against 48-year old former pro boxing heavyweight champion Ray Mercer who was making his professional MMA debut; but none of that mattered much.
Mercer took only 9 seconds to dispatch of Sylvia with a huge right hand. (check the fight out below)
Friend and teammate Jens Pulver now appears prophetic in statements he made just a few days ago about Sylvia setting himself up for a career backslide by coming in nearly 50-pounds overweight and failing to train hard.
"I love [Sylvia] on a personal scale," Pulver told Yahoo, "[but] professionally, sometimes you gotta step back and say 'damn Tim, what are you doing?'
Sylvia now has a little over six weeks to get into top shape and prepare for redemption when he faces Paul Buentello at Affliction III. The fight has been confirmed but Sylvia may face difficulties getting cleared medically to fight as he's likely to face a medical suspension after suffering the knockout loss to Mercer.
