During its Sengoku 10th Battle event earlier today, World Victory Road officials announced a featherweight bout between UFC veteran Michihiro Omigawa and Hatsu Hioki for its Sengoku 11 event on Nov. 7 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.
The Omigawa vs. Hioki bout was originally supposed to happen in the finale of WVR's featherweight grand prix last month, however, Hioki withdrew from the tournament due to a concussion he sustained in his semi-final bout against Masanori Kanehara. Kanehara would replace Hioki and go on to win the tournament by defeating Omigawa.
Omigawa (7-8-1) is coming off the aforementioned loss to Masanori Kanehara in the final of WVR's featherweight grand prix at Sengoku 9 last month. Prior to the loss, he put together three consecutive upset victories to advance to the grand prix's finale. The longtime DEEP veteran holds notable wins over the likes of Jason Chambers, L.C. Davis and Nam Phan.
Hioki (20-3-2) is unbeaten in his last nine bouts, which includes wins over Thierry Quenneville, Rumina Sato, Ronnie Mann and most recently Masanori Kanehara at last month's Sengoku 9 event. He hasn't tasted defeat since October 2007, where he was defeated by Jong Man Kim at a Shooto event.
Hioki has been competing professionally for seven-years, having mostly fought under the Shooto banner. He has finished 14 of his 20 career wins including 10 by submission and he holds notable career wins over Jeff Curran and Mark Hominick.
Also announced during Sengoku 10, World Victory Road made official that it's annual New Year event will happen on New Year's Eve, which will directly compete with its No. 1 competitor, FEG's event, "Dynamite!! 2009." Beginning with the December 31st show, Sengoku will be known as Sengoku Raiden Championship. Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago and Pride veteran Akihiro Gono also confirmed their participation on the Sengoku 11 fight card.
