“I can get him down easily if he wants to be a chiseled heavyweight. I can certainly do that. If he wants to be a light heavyweight I can do that. I could probably get him down to middleweight depending on what his goals are. I could do it the most healthy way possible, extend his life, extend his vitality, all of those things. But in the short term take every possible advantage to get the utmost of his ability.” - Mike Dolce
Could we one day see Roy Nelson enter the Octagon as a light heavyweight, or even a middleweight? Dietician Mike Dolce, the man who has helped both Thiago Alves and Quinton Jackson get their weight in shape, remarked on what he could do for Nelson in an interview with MMAWeekly.com.
The change would be nothing short of radical for Nelson, the heavyweight who is known more for his belly and mullet than actual fighting abilities. "Big Country" has always been one of the heaviest and shortest heavyweights around. The 6 foot tall Nelson is downright puny compared to the likes of Junior dos Santos, Brock Lesnar and Travis Browne.
“In my honest and humble opinion, I believe I could help Roy Nelson unlock his full potential as an athlete, as a fighter, but also in health potential as a human being," Dolce said. "I used to be 280 pounds, so at five-foot-nine I walked around 20 pounds heavier than Roy weighed in at the UFC, and now I’m 188 pounds this morning at six percent body fat."
Nelson and Dolce spoke briefly at UFC 130 following Nelson's fight against Frank Mir. The two had dinner together and will look to expand into a working relationship that would assist Nelson in his career as a mixed martial artist.
In the past Nelson has got away with his less than stellar physique, as he was winning fights. Against Junior dos Santos, Nelson got pounded but that was chalked up more to difference in skill level, rather than difference in cardio. Finally against Mir, we saw an exhausted Nelson barely able to stand following the third round of their fight. After the second, Nelson immediately bent over and put his hands on his knees.
Dana White refused to hold his tongue in the post fight press conference and subsequent interviews. White was disgusted by the lack of cardio and pathetic display. It's hard to promote the best fighters in the world when they gas like Nelson did. The two will have a meeting later this week to discuss Nelson's future.
Maybe the gut finally caught up to Nelson.
So where do you think Nelson is best suited at? Should he stay at 260? Drop to 240 like Dana White suggested in the post fight press conference? Or would Nelson be able to compete at 205 or even 185?
