Miguel Torres talks UFC/WEC merger
by Paulo Silva on August 02, 2009

Miguel Torres is at the top of his game and has been for some time now. The sad thing is that most casual MMA fans wouldn't know him from a regular guy on the street. or know that he hasn't lost in the past 5 years. Torres believes the WEC has matured long enough to develop a talent-rich pool of fighters that the UFC can market and rely upon to sell PPV's.

With names like Urijah Faber, Jose Aldo, Mike Brown, Leonard Garcia, Donald Cerrone, Jamie Varner, Brian Bowles, Jeff Curran, and the aforementioned Torres, you'd think the UFC would be frothing at the mouth to merge the promotions and get down to business.

The exposure for a lot of these fighters is lacking with the WEC on Versus, and even though the WEC is a Zuffa owned promotion, the brand just isn't nearly as marketable.

"We don't get the exposure that they get in the UFC," Torres tells Yahoo! Sports. "They have the bigger fighters and it's easier to push the bigger fighters. The smaller fighters have a lot more skills a lot of the time, but they've spent so much advertising money and marketing dollars and invested so much time pushing guys like [UFC heavyweight champion] Brock Lesnar. There isn't the time or the money or interest, I guess, to push the smaller fighters the same way."
