Mike Swick to replace injured Josh Koscheck against Paulo Thiago at UFC 109
by Jacob Camargo on December 28, 2009

After fighting against American Kickboxing Academy fighters in his first two UFC contests, Brazilian welterweight Paulo Thiago has been matched up with yet another fighter coming out of the San Jose-based camp.

Thiago will face contender Mike Swick, who steps in for his injured teammate Josh Koscheck. The fight will be a part of the the televised main card of UFC 109 on Feb. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. News of the match up was first reported by MMAFighting.com.

As reported earlier today, Koscheck was forced out of the event with an undisclosed injury.

Swick (14-3) suffered his first loss as a welterweight in his last bout, as he was defeated by Dan Hardy at UFC 105 last month. Prior to the loss, he had won four straight bouts against the likes of Josh Burkman, Marcus Davis, Jonathan Goulet and Ben Saunders. Swick has put together a 9-2 UFC record over four years with the promotion, scoring other notable Octagon wins over David Loiseau and Joe Riggs.

Though he has competed for other promotions, such as SuperBrawl and WEC, Swick has fought the majority of his 11-year career with the UFC, fighting 11 of his 17 career bouts with the organization. He has finished nine of his 14 career wins, including seven coming by TKO or KO.

Thiago most recently defeated UFC newcomer Jacob Volkmann via unanimous decision at UFC 106 on Nov. 21. Prior to the win, he suffered his first career loss against Jon Fitch at UFC 100 in July. Thiago sports a 2-1 record in three tough fights with the UFC, with his other Octagon win coming in his UFC debut against Josh Koscheck at UFC 95 in February.

The Jungle Fight veteran has put together a nearly flawless 12-1 MMA record since turning pro in July 2005, with nine of those wins being by stoppage, including seven coming via submission.

UFC 109 is headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between UFC Hall-of-Famers Mark Coleman and Randy Couture. Other bouts featured on the main card will include Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen, Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller and Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg.
