After a month of alleged backdoor deals, name calling, infighting and backstabbing, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic has signed a new three-fight deal with the UFC. The news was announced recently by UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta.
Filipovic was originally brought back to the UFC, on a verbal one-fight deal, after a three-fight hiatus to face Mustafa Al-Turk at UFC 99. UFC President Dana White said the fighter agreed to sign a new three-fight deal with the organization after the event. But, rumors that Filipovic signed with Japanese promotion DREAM, quickly reverberated around the event with Dana White stating, minutes after the event had ended, that the Croatian superstar had gone back on his word and stabbed him in the back.
Filipovic denied this, however, and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta stepped in to clear things up with Filipovic and lock the former PRIDE champion up with the UFC for his next three fights.
Once considered among the very best heavyweight fighters in the world, Filipovic looked like a shell of his former self in three previous fights with the UFC, going 1-2 with losses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo. To be fair, Filipovic has fought numerous injuries and ailments since his 2007 debut with the UFC, including a serious knee injury, but has stated that he's almost completely healed.
Filipovic will now look to get back to the top of the heavyweight heap when he takes on rising UFC prospect Junior dos Santos (8-1) at UFC 103 on Sept. 19. The Team Nogueira product holds big wins over Stefan Struve and Fabricio Werdum and a win over the Brazilian would be a huge coup for Filipovic.
