More On Shine Fights Debacle
by Patrick Sullivan on May 18, 2010

Don King's injunction may have been the proverbial last straw, but Shine Fights' own mismanagement caused their May 15 to be canceled mere hours before showtime. The North Carolina Boxing Authority, which was regulating the event, said the cancellation occurred due to problems with fighters' purses and the absences of a ringside physician.

"The show was canceled due to concerns (about) the fighters' safety and well-being," said superintendant of the NCBA Terrance Merriweather to MMAJunkie.com.

According to NCBA regulations, it is the promotion's responsibility to provide a doctor, and Shine Fights failed to do so. But that was not the only problem; Shine Fights also had to have a bond -minimum $10,000- to the NCBA to cover the fighters' payment, and that was also not done.

As a result of the mess, Shine Fights matchmaker Ron Foster announced his resignation.

"Because of the actions that took place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, I no longer feel that Shine Fights is the place for me," said Foster in an email to fighters and managers on Monday morning.

"It is what it is," said fighter Nick "The Goat" Thompson, who was in attendance, said immediately after the cancellation was announced. "But I think Don King waited until the last second and fucked them over."

MMA Heat correspondent Karyn Bryant reported on her Twitter feedhttp://twitter.com/KarynBryant Saturday night that "Shine Fights told they'll get paid 25% of show money..."

"We're going to take care of the fighters," said Shine Fights CEO Devin Price on Saturday. "We've always been a 'fighters and fans first' organization. We are financially going to take care of the fighters to some extent."

Price never made it to North Carolina; he had been in Florida, in court with Don King Productions, all day Friday and Saturday.

It is unclear at this time whether the fighters have been paid, but main-eventer Din Thomas seems to be happy. On Monday he reported that Shine is sending a check to his management.

"I don't know how much it's for, but my manager says that everything is all good," said Thomas.

As for Shine Fights itself, Price is optimistic and promises to be back. He is eyeing a summer date for the next show.

"This is not the death of Shine Fights," he said.

 |  (2) Comments Wandering_Minstrel: Fuck Don King. Having said that, it sounds like Shine didn't have everything put together properly to begin with, so that looks rather bad on them as well. All of this reminds me ever so much of EliteXC and Affliction right before they fell apart. "This isn't the end..." We'll see. thug4less: It's sad when people are paid to do a job and are revealed to be completely incompetent. I mean, Don King does suck but how are you going to slip on something as essential as purse money and a ringside physician?
