Nate Diaz vs. Gray Maynard to headline UFC Fight Night 20
by Jacob Camargo on October 20, 2009

A lightweight bout between "The Ultimate Fighter" season 5 winner Nate Diaz and fellow TUF 5 alum Gray Maynard is set to headline UFC Fight Night 20 in January. News of the bout was reported by GracieFighter.com, which is operated by Diaz's manager, Cesar Gracie.

Though not officially announced, UFN 20 is expected to take place on Jan. 11 at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.

The winner of the Diaz vs. Maynard UFN 20 bout will likely be in discussions for a title shot in 2010. The bout is a rematch over two years in the making, as both previously fought on TUF 5 where Diaz defeated Maynard via second round submission in their semifinal match-up during the show.

After defeating Manny Gamburyan to win TUF 5, Diaz (11-4) won his next four straight UFC bouts, scoring notable wins over Kurt Pellegrino and Josh Neer. His winning streak would stop there though as he went on to lose back-to-back fights against top lightweight contenders Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson.

Diaz most recently snapped his losing streak and pushed his UFC record to 6-2 by scoring a second round submission win over Melvin Guilliard at last month's UFN 19. The Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fighter has finished all but one of his 11 career wins including eight by submission.

Following a bizarre "no contest" in his octagon debut against Rob Emerson in June 2007, Maynard has put together six straight UFC wins. His victories during the impressive run include wins over notable UFC veterans such as Rich Clementi, Jim Miller, and Frankie Edgar.

Maynard is coming off a split decision win over Roger Huerta in his last bout also at UFC Fight Night 19 on Sept. 16. He has put together an 8-0 MMA record during his three year professional career, with decision wins coming in six of his eight career victories.

Other match-ups tentatively set for UFC Fight Night 20 include top-ten ranked welterweight Josh Koscheck taking on UFC sophomore Mike Pierce and TUF 8 lightweight winner Efrain Escudero facing Nik Lentz. In addition, TUF 1 cast member Chris Leben is expected to do battle with Jay Silva.
