Former UFC middleweight title contender Nate Marquardt wasn't left opponent-less for long, as he is in talks to face Brazilian submission machine Rousimar Palhares at an upcoming UFC event in August.
The bout will reportedly either take place at UFC 117 on Aug. 7 in Oakland, or UFC 118 on Aug. 28 in Boston.
Marquardt (29-9-2) was originally set to face Alessio Sakara at UFC 116 on July 3, however, Sakara was forced off of the card due to the death of his father.
Marquardt is coming off of a unanimous decision loss to Chael Sonnen at UFC 109 in February. The loss cost him a bid at a rematch with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, as he previously put together three straight stoppage wins over Martin Kampmann, Wilson Gouveia and Demian Maia to get back into title contention.
Marquardt holds an 8-3 UFC record, scoring other notable Octagon wins over Dean Lister, Joe Doerksen and Ivan Salaverry, while suffering his only other UFC losses against Thales Leites and Anderson Silva.
Palhares (11-2) is currently riding a three fight winning streak, which includes wins over Jeremy Horn, Lucio Linhares and most recently a submission win over Tomasz Drwal just 45-seconds into their bout at UFC 111 in March.
Palhares' recent win didn't come without controversy, however, as he was suspended for 90 days by the New Jersey Athletic Commission for continuing to crank the heel hook submission he secured on Drwal even after Drwal had tapped and referee Kevin Mulhall stepped in to stop the fight. Mulhall was eventually forced to pry Palhares out of the hold.
Palhares holds a 4-1 UFC record, with his only other Octagon win coming in his debut with the promotion against Ivan Salaverry. He suffered his lone UFC loss to Dan Henderson at UFC 88. The Fury Fighting Championship veteran has finished eight of his 11 career wins by submission and holds other notable wins over Fabio Nascimento and Daniel Acacio.
