A lightweight bout between 10-fight UFC veteran Melvin Guillard and UFC newcomer Waylon Lowe has been booked for the un-televised preliminary portion of UFC 114 after Guillard's original opponent, Thiago Tavares, was forced off of the card due to an elbow injury suffered in training.
News of Tavares' withdrawal from the fight was first reported by BJPenn.com, and Lowe's insertion into the bout with Guillard was originally reported by Heavy.com.
Lowe (8-2) actually made a appearance on "The Ultimate Fighter" season 9 but he was unable to make the show's final cast, as he was defeated by Santino DeFranco in the elimination round. He enters the UFC on a six-fight winning streak, with his most recent win coming over UFC veteran Steve Berger at KOTC: "Bad Boys 2" on April 16.
The four-year veteran has competed for other notable promotions such as Bellator, HOOKnSHOOT, FightFest, Xtreme Fighting Organization and Extreme Challenge. Lowe, who trains out of Jorge Gurgel's academy in Cincinnati, has finished six of his eight career wins.
Guillard (23-8-2) is 4-1 in his last five bouts, most recently defeating Ronys Torres at UFC 109 in February. His lone loss over that span came in his previous bout against Nate Diaz at UFC Fight Night 19.
Guillard has been up and down during his time in the UFC, putting together a 6-4 record in 10 fights with the promotion. He holds other notable Octagon wins over Marcus Davis, Gabe Ruediger, Dennis Siver and Gleison Tibau, while suffering other UFC losses to Rich Clementi, Josh Neer and Joe Stevenson.
UFC 114 takes place on May 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between former UFC light-heavyweight champions and bitter rivals, Rashad Evans and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
