Nick Diaz tests positive for marijuana use following his UFC 143 bout with Carlos Condit according to mmaweekly.com.
"All (UFC 143) results received thus far have been negative, except Mr. Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites. A complaint for disciplinary action against Mr. Diaz has been filed," Keith Kizer, Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director, said.
It is clear now that the Condit vs. Diaz rematch, a fight that Condit accepted, is a no-go for the near future just as Cesar Gracie had said yesterday. Although Diaz is a licensed for medicinal marijuana use in his home state of California, he still needs to adhere to the state athletic commission's guidelines when competing in MMA. Diaz will be suspended and fined in the coming days.
This is not the first time Diaz has had trouble resulting from marijuana use. In 2007, Diaz defeated then top-ranked Takanori Gomi in stunning fashion but submitting the Japanese star with a second round gogoplata. This was turned into a no contest after Diaz tested positive for marijuana use. A similar incident occurred in 2009 when Diaz failed to submit a pre-fight drug test to the California State Athletic Commission which resulted in his removal from the event.
As for Condit, he will meet with Dana White tomorrow to discuss his next course of action.
Update: The typical penalty for marijuana use is a six month suspension but since Diaz is a repeat offender, he may get up to a year's suspension. Diaz is set to appeal to the NSAC in April.
"I am beyond disappointed that he tested positive for marijuana. It is now in the hands of the Nevada State Athletic Commission," Dana White, UFC president, said.
