Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis to fight for Strikeforce's vacant welterweight belt
by Jacob Camargo on December 19, 2009

Nick Diaz and Marius Zaromskis have agreed to fight for Strikeforce's vacant welterweight strap and headline the promotion's Jan. 30 event, which will take place at the Bank Atlantic Arena in Sunrise, Florida. The news of the bout comes from MMAWeekly.com.

According to the report, the match-up is expected to be announced during Saturday's Showtime telecast of Strikeforce: "Evolution."

Diaz was originally set to fight for the Strikeforce welterweight title at the promotion's August 15 event against former IFL welterweight title-holder Jay Hieron, however, he was scratched from the event after he failed to appear for a required pre-fight drug test from the California State Athletic Commission.

Diaz (20-7) is currently riding a five-fight winning streak, which includes wins in his first two Strikeforce bouts over Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith. He has not been defeated since Nov. 2007, where he suffered a much-talked-about first-round TKO loss against K.J. Noons.

During his eight-year career, Diaz has competed for an array of other notable promotions such as; Pride, EliteXC, DREAM, WEC, Shooto and the UFC, where he put together a 6-4 mark in 10 fights with the promotion from 2003 to 2006. He has finished 17 of his 20 career wins and holds other notable victories over the likes of Muhsin Corbbrey, Thomas Denny, Chris Lytle, Robbie Lawler Josh Neer and Gleison Tibau.

Zaromskis (13-3), who signed with Strikeforce in October, has won his last five bouts as well, however, he made waves in the MMA world by winning the DREAM welterweight Grand Prix with two straight head kick knockout wins over Hayato Sakurai and Jason High. He most recently scored his third straight head kick KO win over Myeon Ho Bae at DREAM 12 in October.

Despite just being introduced to the world this past year, the longtime Cage Rage veteran has actually been competing for professionally for nine years. The knockout artist has finished an amazing 10 of his 13 career wins by TKO or KO.

The addition of Diaz vs. Zaromski as the events' headliner makes the Jan. 30 Strikeforce event even more stacked. The card includes Bobby Lashley, who will make his much anticipated Strikeforce debut tentatively against Shane del Rosario, as well as Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, as she makes the first defense of her Strikeforce 145 pound women's title against Marloes Coenen.

In addition, Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL player, Herschel Walker, will also make his Strikeforce debut at the event. Other rumored participants include Robbie Lawler, Jay Hieron, K.J. Noons and Vitor Ribeiro.
