Paulo Thiago is training hard for his rematch against Josh Koscheck at UFC 109 on Feb. 6, 2010.
"A lot of people said the first time was luck," Thiago told Graciemag.com. "I can tell you I'm going to train a lot to beat him again."
Fans were shocked last February when Thiago (12-1) landed an uppercut on Koscheck (14-4) and walked away with a first-round victory at UFC 95. Commentators, like Joe Rogan, and coaches had praised Koscheck's much-improved stand up. Growing up in the realm of wrestling, Koscheck had been focusing 90% on stand up in order to make his game more well-rounded. But even so, the Brazilian welterweight scored a TKO over the American.
"People said it was luck," said Thiago. "But it was a sequence I practiced a lot for the fight. It didn't just happen. It was well rehearsed. I think it's awesome I get to face him again. [The UFC] put him in my way again and I can only thank them for it. I will again face a highly regarded fighter and, to me, it will be a pleasure."
With a 2-1 record inside the Octagon, Thiago is not looking for a title shot just yet. Nevertheless, with another possible win over Koscheck, he said that he it could "get me closer to the head of the line." In his mind, he said that Koscheck and Jon Fitch are the two top contenders for Georges St. Pierre's welterweight belt.
