After being left opponentless for the UFC 107 card in December, Paulo Thiago has now been moved to UFC 106 and will face Minnesota Martial Arts Academy's Jacob Volkmann at the November event. News of the bout was first reported by Gustavo Noblat, who is an MMA blogger at Terra.com.br.
Thiago was left without an opponent for UFC 107 after his original opponent, Thiago Alves, was pulled from their bout in favor of a fight against Jon Fitch on the same card, which is a rematch from their first encounter in June 2006. Fitch was taken off the UFC 106 card due to a knee injury suffered by Ricardo Almeida, Fitch's original opponent.
The Thiago vs. Volkmann welterweight bout will likely end up on the non-televised preliminary portion of UFC 106. The UFC needs to fill the void on the UFC 106 main card left by the cancellation of Fitch vs. Almeida, so either Jake Rosholt vs. Kendall Grove, Amir Sadollah vs. Phil Baroni or Marcus Davis vs. Ben Saunders will likely be promoted to the main card to give the PPV broadcast its standard five fights.
Thiago (11-1) entered the UFC having won the first 10 bouts of his career, and carried that success into his UFC debut in February at UFC 95, where scored a big upset win over Josh Koscheck via first-round TKO .
Thiago most recently suffered his first career loss at the hands of Koscheck's American Kickboxing Academy teammate, Jon Fitch, at UFC 100 in July. The Jungle Fight veteran has finished nine of his 11 career wins, including seven coming by submission.
Volkmann, who is a is a three-time All-American wrestler from the University of Minnesota, is coming off of a very impressive first-round submission win over TUF 9 alum Kevin Knabjian at Bellator 6. He has put together a 9-0 MMA record during his two-year career, with six of his wins coming by submission. Volkmann has notable career wins over Travis McCullough and Bobby Voelker.
Volkmann currently hones his skills at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy, which is home to such notable fighters as Brock Larson, Sean Sherk, Nik Lentz, Nick Thompson and Brock Lesnar.
UFC 106 takes place on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas, NV, and will be headlined by a UFC heavyweight title bout between current champion Brock Lesnar and challenger Shane Carwin. In addition, a rematch between former UFC light-heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffin will serve as the co-main event.
