A welterweight bout between veterans Marcus Davis and Phil Baroni is being discussed for the UFC 111 event in March. News of the bout was first reported by MMAMadness.com.
Many fans have expressed interest in a match up between Davis and Baroni because it pits two wily veterans who have similar crowd-pleasing styles; both prefer to stand and bang. Davis' teammate Jorge Gurgel, among others, have called for the fight with the idea that it would be fun for the fans.
Baroni (13-12) is currently on a two-fight losing streak, most recently losing in his Octagon return against TUF 7 winner Amir Sadollah at UFC 106 last month. He was rumored to have signed a one-fight contract with the UFC, fulfilling the contract with his fight at UFC 106. However, UFC President Dana White stated, following the fight, that he would bring Baroni back for another fight after the tough N.Y. native showed alot of heart and toughness in his loss to Sadollah.
Baroni sports a 3-6 UFC record, with notable Octagon wins coming over Amar Suloev and Dave Menne; while suffering UFC losses against Matt Lindland (x2) and Evan Tanner (x2). He has competed for other notable promotions during his nine-year career such as EliteXC, Strikeforce, Cage Rage, Pride and Icon Sport. Baroni has finished 11 of his 13 career wins including nine coming by TKO or KO, and holds other notable career wins over Ryo Chonan and Yuki Kondo.
Davis (16-6), who recently signed a new-four fight contract with the UFC, has lost back-to-back fights against Dan Hardy at UFC 99 in June and then suffered a devastating first-round knockout loss at the hands of Ben Saunders at UFC 106 last month. Prior to the losses, he had won two straight fights against Paul Kelly and Chris Lytle.
Davis has put together a 8-4 UFC record in 12 fights with the promotion, with other notable Octagon wins over Paul Taylor, Shonie Carter and Pete Spratt. The Hardcore Fighting Championships and Combat Zone veteran has scored stoppages in 13 of his 16 career wins.
Though not officially announced, UFC 111 is expected to take place on March 27, 2010 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The event will likely be headlined by a UFC welterweight title bout between current champ Georges St-Pierre and challenger Dan Hardy. Also being discussed for the event is a possible interim heavyweight title bout between Shane Carwin and Frank Mir.
