Q and A with "The Answer": Exclusive Frank Edgar Interview
by Mike Williams on June 02, 2009

Outside of the cage, Frank Edgar is an easy-going, humble family man that still sees himself as an average guy. Growing up in New Jersey and working for his father's plumbing business even as his professional fighting career started, Edgar understands what it's like to work hard. He has trained and fought with world-class mixed martial artists yet names his father as his hero and one of the strongest men he knows, both mentally and physically.

Once the door to the octagon slams shut Edgar is anything but easy-going. The pace of his fights have earned him "fight of the night" honors twice. He claims his favorite technique is tenacity and although he knows that it's not really a technique, he sees it as one of the most important traits that a fighter can have. In a recent conversation with FiveKnuckles, the self-proclaimed "average" guy discussed topics including his win over Sean Sherk, being a father, and where he stands in the UFC lightweight championship picture.

FiveKnuckles.com: Frank, thanks for joining us today. First off all, congratulations on a big win over a very tough guy in Sean Sherk. Did the fight go pretty much according to your game plan or did Sherk throw some twists that forced you to adjust?

Frank Edgar: I guess you could say it went according to my game plan. I really only have one game plan going into a fight. Usually it's a couple of variations of what you're trying to do. What worked when I started out I kinda just kept doing and it kept working.

FiveKnuckles.com: Many were surprised that Sherk didn't shoot more after it became apparent that you were dominating the stand up. Why do you think he choose to continue standing with you and were you surprised by this?

Frank Edgar: I think when he did shoot he ended up underneath me and I don't think he wanted to risk that. And to be honest with you, I wasn't an easy target to take down and I'm sure that gave him some hesitation as well.

FiveKnuckles.com: How has becoming a father changed you both personally and professionally?

Frank Edgar: I just think it changes everybody, in a positive way obviously. Personally is how it changes you the most. You think about things a little differently, being a father. Professionally it hasn't really made me change too much and I don't think it's going to affect me as a fighter too much.

FiveKnuckles.com: I understand you have a signing coming up to benefit breast cancer. How did you get involved in this charity?

Frank Edgar: A good friend of mine has a friend who coached where I went to high school and his wife was diagnosed with it and it's just something that I can help out with. She has breast cancer and she has two little kids so I just want to help out as much as I can.

FiveKnuckles.com: There was talk before this fight and even in the post fight press conference about you being one of the smaller fighters in the division. There was even talk from Kenny Florian that you should move down to 145 and go over to the WEC. With a win over a big time opponent like Sherk that talk has been put to rest for now. Do you have any interest in dropping down for...
