After coming up on the losing end of a unanimous decision against Rashad Evans in one of the most highly-anticipated fights in UFC history, it's understandable that Quinton "Rampage" Jackson isn't happy.
His reasons, however, go deeper than the mere fact of his loss.
Jackson, who prides himself on putting on an exciting show, struggled to find his rhythm against Evans for most of their fight.
And for that he would like to offer an apology.
"I apologise for the fight not so much because I lost but because of how it went down," Jackson told FightersOnly. "I always like to put on exciting fights for the fans but Rashad came out to use that 'Greg Jackson' plan: be boring and squeak out a victory. So that bothers me more than the loss."
Although "Rampage" feels that the blame for any lack of excitement lies squarely on the shoulders of his opponent, he admits that Evans' strategy kept him from pressing the action in the third round after he staggered Evans with a punch. Jackson's reluctance to close with Evans even after he seemed to have him hurt sealed the deal on his eventual defeat.
"The reason why (I didn't close) is because I thought he wanted me to rush in so he could take me down again," Jackson explained. "That's the worst time to rush in and take somebody out. So the whole time I was walking on eggshells and trying to keep him from taking me down because Rashad is an awesome wrestler and I was having trouble getting up off the floor. So I figured if I rushed in he was gonna take me down."
Jackson also revealed he was nursing an injured knee going into UFC 114, a fact that he tried to keep a secret. Strangely enough, Evans seemed to be targeting the injured knee during their fight.
"I remember one other thing he was doing - he was punching me in my knee!" Jackson stated. "It was weird because I had suffered a real bad knee injury in camp but we kept it secret, we didn't say anything about it and we didn't even tell the UFC. I told my doctor and that was it, he helped me out but I was going to back out of the fight. The only reason I didn't back out was the fight had been so hyped and I didn't want to disappoint the fans. Why was he punching me in the knee though? That's kind of weird - did he find out about the injury? I don't know. Its weird."
Jackson is now escaping the weirdness by touring to support his new movie, The A-Team, which opened in theaters on June 11. His next fight has not yet been scheduled.
