"At this moment in time I'm a free agent. I went and sat down with Dana after the fight and discussed a few things, and I can tell you this, I've got one more big fight left in me and its going to have to be against the winner of the GSP/Alves fight this July. Nothing else makes sense right now. I can't really get myself motivated for anything else at this point in my career. I feel my chances against either guy are as good as anyones right now."
-Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes on his future in the UFC. Hughes defeated Matt Serra via decision this past Saturday at UFC 98 to run his record to 43-7. The former 9-time UFC champion lost to both Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves in back-to-back lopsided affairs.
Given the unconvincing nature of Hughes' win over Serra, it's difficult to see how a fight against St. Pierre or Alves would be different, but Hughes has the heart of a champion and deserves to go out on his shield. He's right about having another big fight in him, at least from a PPV and economic perspective, and either fight would likely still draw well for the organization. And being that their isn't a clear number cut contender after Alves if St. Pierre wins, the fight could be a possibility.
