Light-heavyweight prospect Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante now has his third opponent for Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" on June 6. He will face Mike Kyle in a bout set for the preliminary portion of the card. News of the bout was confirmed by MMAWeekly.com.
Kyle replaced Jared Hamman who withdrew from the bout due to a broken nose. Cavalcante's original June 6 opponent was set to be a title shot against light heavyweight champion Renato "Babalu" Sobral. Sobral withdrew from the contest due to family issues.
Cavalcante hasn't fought in nearly a year since defeating Travis Galbraith at last July's EliteXC: "Unfinished Business." He was originally slated to fight at the EliteXC event in November against Cyrille Diabate, however, the promotion dissolved before the event could take place. IFL veteran, Cavalcante, sports a 7-1 MMA record, with his only loss coming to Marcio Cruz via DQ (Illegal kick).
Kyle hasn't been too active either. He's won two straight after defeating Mychal Clark last August. The former UFC prospect may be best known to fans for being suspended for two-years by the California State Athletic Commission for striking a fighter past the referee's stoppage. Kyle is a UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, Pancrese and KOTC veteran, and holds notable wins over James Irvin and Wes Sims.
Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" will take place next week at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. Robbie Lawler will take on Jake Shields in a 182-pound catchweight bout which will serve as the highlight event of the evening. Lawler vs. Shields also features Nick Diaz taking on Scott Smith in a highly anticipated 180-pound catchweight bout. Top ten ranked heavyweight Andrei Arlovski is stepping in on short notice for Alistair Overeem to fight undefeated prospect Brett Rogers as well.
