Mauricio Rua's former coach, Rafael Cordiero, states that "Shogun" needs to train harder if he wishes to be on top again according to mmamania.com.
"What I can say, is that if he wants back to the top he needs to start training," Cordiero said.
Cordiero once served as Rua's head trainer during his time with the Chute Box Academy in Brazil, which dates back to Rua's career in Pride FC. Cordiero would leave Chute Box to start Kings MMA stateside. Rua trained with Cordiero for his rematch with Forrest Griffin at UFC 134, winning via TKO in the first round.
"He needs to start training as much as he can. He needs to work hard it's no joke; this sport is a hard sport," Cordiero said.
However for his last bout, a unanimous decision loss to Dan Henderson at this past weekend's UFC 139, Rua opted to not train with Cordiero.
"It's hard because you are fighter, you are manager, you are coach you are everything. In Shogun's case, he is the boss there. So when he wants to stop the training, he stops and nobody is going to say no to Shogun and say 'No Shogun, you need to work a little bit more'...You need to work hard and you need to work on your techniques and your cardio. He needs to put that in his head if he wants back to the top," Cordiero said.
Currently Rua has stated that he will take be taking time off to recuperate from his five round war with Henderson and expects to make his decision for his next move within the following weeks.
