Randy Couture has forgotten more about fighting than most people have probably ever known. The 47-year old has been around mixed martial arts since 1997 and wrestling much longer than that. The way he studies the sport and analyzes opponents is a thing of beauty and he is well regarded for his ability to game plan.
To put all of that bluntly, Couture is knowledgeable about the sport of mixed martial arts. He knows the ins and outs, the little tricks and the dirty secrets. To hear him talk about the sport is truly akin to listening to a living legend.
Recently the mixed martial arts community has been up in arms over teammates refusing to fight other teammates. It started with the drama at AKA when welterweights Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch refused to step inside the cage with each other. Things eventually cooled over but now the debate has been brought front and center thanks to Jon Jones and Rashad Evans.
Perhaps it's his wrestling background or his general approach to the sport, but Couture sees no problem in fighting teammates or life long friends.
"I wrestled both those guys (Dan Henderson and Matt Lindland) for a long, long time and we certainly beat each other up in the training environment many, many times for nothing," Couture told the MMA Fight Corner presented by FiveKnuckles.com. "I think at the end of the day, we're professional athletes and this is what we're asked to do, and sometimes it's against your friends. I certainly, as a wrestler, have had a different mentality about all of that because I had to beat some of my friends off the team to keep my spot. To go to the world championships or go to the NCAA's I had to wrestle some guys I was good friends with. We both shook hands at the end of it. One of us went and one of us didn't and that's just the way it is.
"I think if it came down to that, yeah, I think Danny and Matt certainly would both have that same attitude. Would we like it? We probably wouldn't like it but we'd do it."
While Couture immediately saw no issue with fighting teammates, Evans and Jones weren't exactly so quick to pull the trigger. After initially declaring their intentions to never fight each other, comments made by both men eventually eased those thoughts. Animosity continued to build until the two conceded that they would square off in a UFC title bout.
Many fans see Evans as more easy pickings for Jones, who has demolished everyone placed in front of him. Others see Evans as a formidable opponent with the striking and wrestling to humble Jones. Captain American is somewhere in the middle.
"It's a tough fight to call," Couture said. "I think both guys have tremendous ability, I think you can make a case for either guy. I guess you take the wrestling and cross it out because both guys have great wrestling skills. Then it becomes a striking battle. I think the longer, kind of rangier Jon Jones has probably got the advantage in the striking battle. I'd have to go with Jon."
However, Couture isn't counting out what Evans brings to the table. While praising the ridiculous ascent by Jones, Couture let it be known that guys like Evans will test the young phenom.
"Well I think [Jon Jones] is certainly a very talented fighter, a very talented athlete,"...
