Randy Couture talks game plan against Brandon Vera
by Jacob Camargo on November 10, 2009

“Well, I definitely don’t want to stand around and allow him to establish his range and hit his rhythm. I’d like to make it as much of a wrestling match as I can. That’s what’s going to put me in the best position to win. I’ve seen Brandon fight a lot and I’m very familiar with his style, with how he uses his hands, with his motion. If you’re a fighter, you definitely have to fashion your training camp to work out the right game plan for your opponent, to be ready for the problems he poses and to make the right plan to beat him. I’ve studied the places he likes to be and where he doesn’t like to be and now it’s up to me to use that in the Octagon.”- Randy Couture

Former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture talks to MMA FanHouse about the strategy he plans to employ for his fight against Brandon Vera. The bout will headline UFC 105, which takes place this Saturday, Nov. 14, in Manchester, England. Couture will be fighting for the first time in the light-heavyweight division since losing to Chuck Liddell at UFC 57 in February 2006, which prompted Couture's retirment from the sport.

Couture came out of retirement a year later, this time as a heavyweight, where he faced and defeated Tim Sylvia for the UFC heavyweight title. He then successfully defended the title by dispatching of Gabriel Gonzaga. Couture most recently suffered a loss against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102 in August. The loss was his second straight, with his previous loss coming against Brock Lesnar in a heavyweight title match.

This training camp may have been a bit different for Couture as he was without longtime striking coach Shawn Tompkins, who recently left Couture's camp, Xtreme Couture, and moved to the Tapout facility, also located in Las Vegas, to resurrect his Team Tompkins brand.

Speculation has arose that if Couture wins in impressive fashion, then he may be given a light heavyweight title shot. Hopefully that hasn't deterred Couture's focus because Vera is a very well-rounded fighter who will be looking for the knockout.
