Former light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans finds himself without an opponent after the sudden retirement of his rival, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.
The feud between Evans and Jackson started at UFC 96 after "Rampage" beat Evans' teammate Keith Jardine. The two got into a heated verbal exchange when Evans' came into the ring following Jackson's win.
The UFC seized the opportunity and booked Evans and Jackson as opposing coaches on TUF 10. Evans and Jackson were then schedulted to meet at UFC 107 on Dec. 12, however, the bout was pushed back to a later date after Jackson landed the movie role of B.A. Baracus in the new 'A Team' remake. The Evans vs. Jackson bout was then shelved indefinitely after "Rampage" suddenly decided to retire two days ago in order to focus on a movie career, heal from injuries and escape mounting criticism from fans and UFC President Dana White.
However, all isn't lost for Rashad Evans as he recently revealed that he is looking to fight at the January UFC event, UFC 108. He believes that Thiago Silva would the best opponent for him at the moment.
"Thiago Silva is a good fighter, I'd like to fight him and I think he wants to fight me," Evans said in an interview with MMAFanhouse. "When I saw him after he fought Keith Jardine, he kind of gave me a nasty look that I interpreted like he wanted to take me on, and I'd like that. I think I match up really well with Thiago Silva," Evans said. "He's a great striker, and I love his focus. He's going to be a challenge, and that's the kind of fight I want."
Evans (13-1-1) hasn't fought since suffering his first career loss to current light-heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at UFC 98 in May. The Jackson Submission Fighting product sports an impressive 8-1-1 record in 10 appearances with the UFC, with big wins over Jason Lambert, Stephan Bonnar, Michael Bisping, Chuck Liddell, and Forrest Griffin.
Silva (14-1) is fresh off a win over Keith Jardine at UFC 102 last month. Prior to the win, he also suffered the first loss of his career against Lyoto Machida at UFC 94 in January. The American Top Team fighter holds a 5-1 UFC record, with other notable octagon wins over James Irvin, Tomasz Drwal and Houston Alexander. Also of note, Silva has finished all but one of his 14 career wins including 11 coming by TKO or KO.
