"I whooped that ass! I mastered my game and his. No days to train, two days notice. You ain't shit Tim. The underdog always comes out on top. They tried to take it from me by making me fight this shit. I trained eight weeks for a boxing match and they gave me two days notice. I need money, so I knocked [him] out!"
-Ray Mercer, 48, gives his thoughts on his 9-second knockout of former UFC champion Tim Sylvia in his MMA debut at Adrenaline MMA III. Mercer was choked out by Kimbo Slice in an MMA exhibition back in 2007, his only other MMA encounter.Sylvia came into the bout weighing 310-pounds; well over the 265-pounds he fought at in his UFC days. Reports out of his camp claim that he was barely training and wasn't taking the fight seriously.
Regardless, with one punch former boxing champion Ray Mercer was able to give both Sylvia and MMA a black eye. The loss of a former MMA champion in an MMA match to a nearly 50-year-old boxer with virtually no MMA training or experience is not a good mark for the sport.
Here's to hoping UFC President Dana White can get back on the horn with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and offer him up to Sean Sherk again for some redemption.
