A welterweight bout between Ricardo Almeida and Matt Brown is in the works for UFC 111 on March 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. News of the bout was first reported by ESPN's "MMA Live" today, who stated that Almeida has verbally agreed to the fight with Brown.
Almeida was previously rumored to be facing Thiago Alves at UFC 111, however, Alves has since been matched up against Jon Fitch.
Almeida (11-3) is 9-1 in his last 10 bouts, but hasn't fought since picking up his second-straight win over Kendall Grove at UFC 101. The fight was his last at middleweight. He was originally set to make his welterweight debut at UFC 106 on Nov. 21 against Jon Fitch before being forced off of the event after tearing the MCL and meniscus in one of his knees while training. Almeida sports a 4-3 UFC record, scoring other Octagon wins over Eugene Jackson, Rob Yundt and Matt Horwich.
Beside his seven fights with the UFC, Almeida fought his other seven career bouts with Japanese promotions Pride and Pancrese, where he was the fourth Pancrase middleweight champion. The third-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt holds other notable career wins over the likes of Ikuhisa Minowa, Kazuo Misaki, Ryo Chonan, Yuki Sasaki, and is one of only two men to submit UFC middleweight contender Nate Marquardt.
Brown (11-7) has won his last three bouts, picking up wins over Ryan Thomas, Pete Sell and most recently James Wilks at UFC 105 in November. Prior to the wins, he suffered his first UFC loss against Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 88 in September 2008. The Ultimate Fighter 7 cast member holds a 4-1 UFC record, scoring a win in his UFC debut over Matt Arroyo.
Brown has been competing professionally for over four-years, while fighting for other notable promotions such as Absolute Fighting Championships, FightFest and United Fight League. He has finished all of his 11 career wins.
UFC 111 features a championship double-header which includes a UFC welterweight title bout between champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Dan Hardy. In addition, Frank Mir and Shane Carwin will battle it out for the interim heavyweight title.
